The AcouMAT - a study of novel materials for enhanced acoustic performance in distributed mode loudspeakers (DML).
The AcouMAT project is an innovative approach to investigating the complex relationship between the mechanical, chemical, and structural properties of materials and their acoustic behaviour in distributed mode loudspeakers (DML). This technology uses flat panels to evenly distribute sound through vibrations, offering enormous potential for the audio industry.

Challenges in Acoustic Performance
One of the biggest challenges facing the audio industry is the inconsistent acoustic performance of materials used in DML loudspeakers. Hidden Sound, as an emerging Swiss audio technology company, has addressed this challenge in collaboration with the materials and acoustics laboratories of HEPIA. The goal was to identify the physical properties critical for stable, high-quality sound reproduction.
Material Analysis and Its Significance
As part of the project, natural porous materials such as balsa wood and paulownia were analyzed in detail. The researchers investigated how various factors such as structure, crystallinity, moisture content, hardness, stiffness, and chemical composition influence sound clarity. Using modern techniques such as optical and electronic microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and infrared spectroscopy, the mechanical and chemical properties of the materials were precisely determined.
Influence of Material Variability
The results of the analyses clearly showed that the variability of mechanical and chemical properties has a significant impact on the variation in acoustic response. This insight is crucial for the development of materials that ensure consistent sound quality. Furthermore, multiphysics simulations enabled precise modeling and prediction of material behavior, facilitating rapid material screening without the need for complex prototypes.
Impact on the Future of the Audio Industry
By gaining deeper insight into the material properties that influence acoustic quality, Hidden Sound can now specifically select sustainable and consistent materials for future production. This is a crucial step toward industrialization and enables entry into highly competitive markets such as smart home audio, education, healthcare, and public spaces.
Strengthening Collaboration and Regional Innovation
The results of the AcouMAT project not only promote collaboration between academic and industrial partners, but also support regional economic development through Swiss innovation. The findings from this project represent an important contribution to the further development of audio technology and the creation of a more sustainable and efficient market.
